Sleep Time

FlowingLove (Daniel Siegel) suggests that you, as a teen, get 8 1/2 – 9 hours of sleep at night to optimize your brain growth, because your brain continues to grow when you sleep.

How much sleep do you get?

When FlowingLove says ‘need’ that means in order to get optimal brain growth, optimal memory consolidation of the day’s learning, optimal insulin function and food metabolism, optimal immune function to fight off disease, optimal response to stress to deal with life’s hassles, and optimal mental functioning with effective abilities for focsing attention, thinking, remembering, problem solving, handling your emotions, and connecting with others in relationships.

Without good sleep you may be moody or grumpy, not much fun to be around, not remember what you’ve learned, more prone to gain weight.

FlowingLove furhter suggests:

  1. Turn off all digital devices 1 hour before bedtime.
  2. Don’t do homework in bed.
  3. Minimize intake of caffeine and chocolate before bed.
  4. Write in your journal about your day’s events.
